More than 24 tonnes of recycled items were collected by SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM) from September until last month via the solid waste separation programme.
State Housing, Local Government and Environment Chairman Datuk Ismail Othman said the amount of recycled items collected showed a monthly increase despite the participation of only 30 per cent of society.
"Briefings on recycling of solid waste must be redoubled to create awareness of recycling before June 1 next year (when penalties will be imposed for non-compliance of the recycling move)," he told a media conference here, today.
He said the implementation of recycling of solid waste could reduce by 40 per cent the amount of soild wastes dumped at disposal sites.
Melaka SWM chairman Dr Al'Ashari Othman said numerous plans were formulated to make the recycling programme a success including disseminating information and pamphlets on recycling, and briefings at mosques and to local council members.

PAKAR ZOOLOGI BANTU PULIHKAN ZOO MELAKA
