Gunabalan's ode to Nyonya Laksa

Unlike any great (t)art, great cuisine comes from the heart and is fueled by passion.

When well executed, it visualizes a feast for the senses that thrills with promises of yet to come galore and the glory of gumption.

In Malaccan culture, the mixing of different races and spices enables this noblest of efforts to produce miracles in her kitchens and cafes and restaurants.

The ubiquitous Laksa is the off spring of such a local efforts. Do not be surprise to note that such is the potency and flavor of this fusion dish that all the races in Melaka have their own version of it.

From the Malays to the Chitty's to the Chinese, as you traverse the kitchens, the tell tale  sights and smells that wafts through and greets you tell tales of promised gluttony and gobbled savouries.

Melaka's Nyonya Laksa in particular is fantabulous if you're searching for an epiphany of  visually striking colors, sweltering tongues greedily gobbling the next spoonful of it's heaven inducing broth in your food all done with the promise of an early coronary attack.

The seductive, tasty attraction of this piping hot coconut milk laced noodle broth /sauce is legendary.

Laced with the right amount of local noodles, shredded bunga kantan buds, seafood,  other seasonal secret ingredients and spices, this  bowl of artery blocking, mouth watering, eye smarting concoction is a blessing for all those who crave spicy asian fast food.

In Melaka, you can have this broth almost everywhere in town but i prefer the ones specially prepared by the aged aunties and uncles in pushcarts as they traverse the weather beaten lanes and streets fronts off Jalan Bunga Raya in old Melaka as these would be the best flavored and original tasting types.

Though it's true time has taken it's toll on that way of doing business and you hardly see these people anymore but seek and you might be surprised to find them in the oddest little shops within the nook and crannies of the old town; that little old lady hiding behind what looks like a remnant of a 1970's type shop-lot perhaps, with her toothy grin and half past six exclamations; furiously dipping into the steaming pot of broth she prepared lovingly hours earlier, ready to offer you, a complete stranger, a chance in  tasting her version of culinary heaven.

Having this Laksa here in this city with an old styled black coffee as a chaser will bring back memories for you (or at least create one if you haven't ever sweltered over a bowl of this tasty & fire alarm inducing bowl of noodles before.)

Simply lovely.

China's quiet expansionism

China seems to be making up for lost time since its introverted years as the 'Middle Kingdom' with its delusion of being the centre of mankind. Instead of being in control, Westerners came to conquer and plunder and even set up an 'International Settlement' for themselves which was out of bounds to the local Chinese!

'No Dogs or Chinese Allowed' in Shanghai which angered Bruce Lee in one of his famous films, 'Fist of Fury', was the ultimate humiliation.

Since Deng Xiaoping, China has opened up its economy and made extraordinary strides in achieving incredible growth, to become the world's second largest economy, after USA.

I can still remember their 'Ping Pong' diplomacy when China re-established diplomatic relations with Malaysia. Since then, China seems to believe that the best public relations is to help where there is a need. A couple of cliches come to mind: 'A hungry man is an angry man', feed him, but better still, make him self-sufficient; 'A bankrupt needs money', lend him, but better still, make him self-reliant; and so on. Gratitude that follows seem certain with this kind of soft approach. There was not much room for suspicions since there was no coercion nor conditions attached.

These are my comments after reading the following article...

Excerpts and graphics from Syed Akhbar Ali's Outside the Box "China encircles the Globe":

"So here was Wen Jiabao, the Vicegerent of Mao Tse Tung’s Communist Victory in 1949, coming to save ‘Mother of Western Democracy’ Greece from bankruptcy. The Chinese have given an undertaking to buy up any amount of Bonds that the Greek Government may issue to save themselves."

"As Western investors head for the hills, it turns out that China is turning the Greece crisis into an opportunity for expansion," said someone.

The Chinese want a gateway into Europe," Theodoros Pangalos, Greece's deputy prime minister, said in an interview. "They are not like these Wall Street [expletive] pushing financial investments on paper. The Chinese deal in real things, in merchandise. And they will help the real economy in Greece."

The Chinese have pledged to spend US$700 million to construct a new pier and upgrade existing docks. The ultimate goal for China, for which these Greek investments are a stepping stone, is "to create a network of roads, pipelines, railroads and port facilities--sort of a modern Silk Road--to boost East-West trade.

China is investing heavily in food production throughout Africa. Most certainly much of that output will find its way back to China but the Chinese are increasing food availability and food security in Africa. A nation’s food security depends on the irrigation networks, water supply infrastructure and productive farmland in operation in the country. The Chinese are increasing all these and more in Africa.

The Chinese are also building deep water ports in a place called Gwadar in Baluchistan (Pakistan), Chittagong in Bangladesh, Hambantotta in Sri Lanka and also a place called Kyaukpyu in Myanmar.

All these port developments will have significant positive impact on the immediate economies in these regions and eventually on the world economy. The port at Kyaukpyu is interesting because it is a bypass to the Straits of Malacca. The huge port investments there by the Chinese will see oil and other goods being unloaded and then shipped off to the Chinese interior.

Logically ports like Singapore may be threatened. It is interesting to note that although the Chinese financed and built the new port at Gwadar in Pakistan, they have deferred for the Port of Singapore Authority to operate Gwadar for the next 40 years.

In Sri Lanka China has become a partner of choice for the big Hambantota port project. China’s Export-Import Bank is financing 85 percent of the US$1 billion project (RM3.1 Billion). China Harbour Engineering, a state-owned company, is building it. Similar arrangements have been struck for an international airport nearby.
This is the new Silk Road. It would be very, very shortsighted if we in Malaysia do not become an active player in these developments involving China. And we are smack in the middle of the entire region...

Malacca Temptations

The evenings in Melaka City are enjoyable when you are in the right company, ya?

Last week, we got together with some like minded friends to partake in the offer of a hosted buffet dinner and drinks party at the local SMR Club.

If the spirit is willing, malaccans can be spoilt for choice where night entertainment is concerned nowdays!

At the particular Gaming Club we attended, many of the attendees were in fact quite jovial although many were not seeing Lady Luck yet.

Probably because the Ladies of the Club were busy entertaining them all! Where luck and women is concerned,it really is not our choice what we get for the night.Women can be finicky, don't you think?

Lucky me,although I've got crappy luck where gaming is concerned but when I invest in someone it almost always pays out well !

And truth be told, tallied, counted and weighed, the net gains of that night were preety impressive for us common folks !

This particular Club belongs to the local conglomerate Berjaya. One must remember that companies like Berjaya is able to sustain its profitable corporate margins because no matter how lucky or clever an individual thinks or works up a system to beat the odds, the House always wins.

In gambling, the odds are always with the House ( proprietor ).

But, the idea of going there is catching on with locals here. The promotions are also value for money because for the price of a Dinner out with friends and family, one gets the added entertainment of the club hostesses, seafood buffets & hosted alcoholic drinks and definitely the posh surroundings is good enough to impress and bring company to. We also met some who were not so lucky that night but they seem to enjoy the losses that they were evidently sustaining so in perspective one supposes not everything would be about winning, don't you think?

There was a time not very long ago that people only ate out in the restaurants and hotels enclosed but nowadays the city is beautifully lighted up and you can see the populace coming out at the evening and nights to patronize the eateries and cafes and fast food joints ,even way out here in Ayer Keroh and Bukit Beruang.

The night was followed swiftly with a visit to a few drinking holes familiar to us whenever the urge comes i.e in Bukit Baru or Melaka Raya and today, I was in a good mood.

Despite being a small town, you'll be surprised just how much the action heats up at night in certain spots around the city.

Places I would recommend include the likes of :Rally Club in Bukit Baru; The Library, Movida, Jail House, The Cube; Pure Bar, The Jetty; Sunshine Bar which are all in Melaka Raya area whereas in Jonker Street; we have Hawk’s Place; Geographer &; Honky Tonk Cafe in Lorong Hang Jebat.

The good thing about Malacca is that it is studded with watering holes so you can choose to enjoy your drinks indoors or sip your drinks on the outside boardwalk.

Belt out cheesy tunes at GoGo KTV till 2 a.m. or spend the night listening to the thumping good hip hop beats spun by DJ Tokyo at Pure Bar and dance the night away at The Cube.It goes without saying that Malacca nightlife allows plenty of scope for visitors to join the party despite being a small town.

I suppose familiarity breeds contempt because after so many years of taking the same route home, i never realized or even once stopped to admire the beautiful landscapes in and around the town and surrounding housing estates. This city truly is a lighted beauty at night.

The recent mushrooming cafe revival in Malim Jaya,Batu Berendam, Bachang and Taman Merdeka is also feeding the people with more decent entertainment for family dinners and friends to" lepak ". With their high end big TV's showing everything from the latest satelite Movies to  every popular Sporting Programme, every body  in the group will have something to watch in cool, comfortable surroundings .

Even the roads off the main highways are incandescent with the glow of the warm yellow lights that throw shadows away and give a glow of warmth and safety.

To those who have yet to  visit melaka, Rest assured, all around the main roads leading in and out of Malacca City the fairy tale lights and romantic atmosphere is evident, making this a very romantic and enticing city to visitors and locals alike at night!

It appears my Old dodgy Town has truly transformed itself into a magnificent City.
